Local Elections – Are You Registered in the Right Place?
Last week we asked a simple question: Am I registered to vote?
This week we take a step further: Am I registered in the right place?
In local elections, you vote in the area where you are registered. If you have moved home in recent years, it is important to ensure that your registration reflects your current address.
This week:
Check that you are registered—and that your details are correct.
You can do this with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in just a few minutes:
• Visit www.elections.org.za
• Select “Check your registration status”
• Enter your South African ID number
This will confirm whether you are registered, and where you are registered to vote.
If your details are not correct, or if you are not yet registered, you may:
• Update or register online via the IEC website, or
• Visit your local IEC office or a registration weekend
Please remember: once the election date is officially announced, the voters’ roll closes shortly thereafter. For this reason, parishioners are encouraged to ensure that their registration is in order now.
Why are we raising this?
The Church does not direct us who to vote for, but she does remind us of our responsibility to contribute to the common good: “as far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” (CCC 1915).
