Local Elections – Why This Matters
In the months ahead, our country will prepare for local elections, possibly taking place in November. Over the coming weeks, the parish newsletter will include short notices to help parishioners ensure they are registered and able to participate.
Why are we raising this?
The Church does not direct us how to vote. Rather, she encourages each of the faithful to take responsibility for the common good, and to participate in the life of society with a well-formed conscience. As the Catechism reminds us, “as far as possible citizens should take an active part in public life” (CCC 1915).
Local government decisions affect the daily life of our communities in very practical ways. For this reason, participation in elections is one of the ordinary ways in which we contribute to the good of all.
This week: Are you registered to vote?
You can check your registration status by visiting the IEC website (www.elections.org.za) and selecting “Check your registration status” where you will be asked to enter your ID number.
If you are not registered, you may register:
• Online via the IEC website, or
• In person at your local IEC office or during a registration weekend.
Please note: once the election date is officially announced, it is no longer possible to register, so it is important to do so in good time.
